Designed in 1940 by Charles Eames in collaboration with Eero Saarinen, the Organic chair was originally designed for the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition held by the Museum of Modern Arts, New York.
Eames, known for his innovation in wood moulding techniques and use of fibreglass, in conjunction with Saarinen’s ability to adapt his style to diverse applications, resulted in the creation of the first of many chair designs to mould wood into complex curves and use cycle welding techniques to bond rubber and wood.
Initially, due to complications associated with the cost of production and technology in association with its war time context, the Organic chair was considered unviable for manufacturing. However, by the 1950s mass production was feasible for the Eames and Saarinen’s Organic chair, which saw it used widely as a reading chair or an occasional lounge chair in residential, hospitality and commercial interior applications.
The Organic Chair, designed to mimic the natural sitting position features a laminate seat shell, solid timber legs and upholstery.
Our replica Eames/Saarinen Organic Chair is a high quality reproduction in regard to construction and specification.
