Dining Table Sizes Guide
When picking out the perfect dining table, there are three key measurements to keep in mind: Height, Width (or diameter), and Length.
Get these right, and your table will feel naturally balanced in the room. No bumping elbows, no juggling act to find space for each dish, and no awkward reaching over your dinner guests. Here’s a simple breakdown of each of the dining table dimensions...
While there’s no universally agreed “standard” height of dining tables in the UK, there is a comfortable range that fits most people, chairs, and dining setups. That sweet spot is between 72–76cm.
At Cult, the majority of our dining tables sit at a height of 74cm or 76cm. This range offers the ideal amount of legroom when paired with standard dining chairs, while still keeping the tabletop low enough for natural, comfortable dining.
Just as important as the overall height is the clearance underneath the table. To allow diners to sit comfortably, there should ideally be around 25cm of space between the underside of the tabletop and the dining chair seat.
Once you’ve decided on the right height, the next step is choosing a table that comfortably fits your space and diners. The most useful way to think about size is by how many people you want to seat, and whether you want your table to be compact (round or square), or elongated (rectangular or oval).
Below is a simple guide to minimum dining table dimensions:
Ideal for slotting into corners, compact kitchens, or smaller dining rooms, these tables offer a social, intimate dining experience. They’re best suited for 2–4 diners.
Elongated tables are a go-to for larger rooms, families, or those who love to entertain at home. They provide plenty of surface area for serving dishes, and can be scaled up easily if you need to squeeze in a few extra chairs or low stools. They’re also ideal for pairing with dining benches.
For comfort, the width of an elongated dining table should be at least that of a compact table - so a minimum of 75cm across. This ensures diners can sit at each end and along the sides without feeling cramped.
Enjoy hosting, but don’t want to commit to a larger dining table full-time? Extendable dining tables are a smart, space-saving solution. They offer the flexibility to keep your everyday dining space clutter-free, while still being able to seat extra guests when needed. Ideal for dinner parties, family gatherings, or festive feasts
Dining Table Sizes Guide
Once you’ve got your dimensions sorted, the next big decision is shape. The shape of your dining table influences how people interact and how the room feels, as well as how much space you need to move around comfortably.
Dining Table Sizes Guide
Before you dive straight in and buy, it’s worth taking a moment to consider your space. While a table might look perfect online, if it ends up being too big - or too small - to sit comfortably in the dining area, it just won’t work.
Measure the width and length of your dining space, ensuring you allow enough room for people to move around comfortably. At least 90cm clearance on all sides of the table is recommended. This ensures chairs can be pulled out all the way without bumping into other dining room furniture or leaving marks on the walls.
If you want to see how a table will sit in the room before committing, try marking out its outline on the floor with masking tape.
Measure the depth of your dining chairs and factor this into your clearance. You want chairs to pull out fully and diners to have enough space to sit back comfortably without feeling squeezed in.
We offer dining table sets that match chairs with tables perfectly, both in terms of style and the space they take up.
Take note of doorways, walkways, and any furniture you’ll need regular access to, like sideboards and cabinets. Make sure these aren’t blocked, and that there’s a clear path around the table for easy movement. It also helps to measure and factor in any doors, ensuring there’s enough clearance for them to swing freely without hitting the table or chairs.
If you love hosting or your household tends to grow around mealtimes, make sure you plan for those moments so that your dining area can effortlessly adapt. Leave a little extra space for additional chairs or stools, or even a handy side table for keeping drinks or extra cutlery.
