Boucle is a textured fabric made from looped yarn, known for its soft, cosy feel and invitingly tactile nubby appearance.
Pronounced “boo-clay”, boucle is loved for its soft and cosy texture - a unique character that comes from a special weaving technique. The yarns are twisted at different tensions to create tiny natural loops, which are then woven or knitted in various ways, forming the fabric’s signature curly surface and rich depth. Due to this process, boucle can be made from traditional wool, modern synthetic materials, or even silk. For our boucles, after weaving, the fabric is gently finished - through processes such as washing, steaming, or brushing - to enhance softness while preserving its natural looped texture.
So, what does boucle mean? From the French boucler (“to loop” or “to curl”), this perfectly describes both how boucle fabric is woven as well as its distinctive appearance. It is these curled strands of material that give that unique look and feel.
Once seen as dated and tied to the ornate interiors of the early 1940s, boucle had a resurgence around the 1950s. Familiar with a certain Coco Chanel and her famous suits? Well, interior design soon followed and we saw boucle incorporated into the home, this time in more modern silhouettes and exciting new colourways. One iconic example would be Eero Saarinen’s ‘Womb’ Chair. The luxurious material took on new life as boucle was reimagined into a cosy necessity, featuring modern shapes, revived tones, and clean silhouettes.
Rooted in early-20th-century design, boucle has always carried a luxurious and expensive quality. Today, it’s been reimagined from the classic soft teddy textures into striking yet versatile upholstery in a spectrum of colours - ready to suit your contemporary style.
The Sustainability Factor
At Cult, we offer recycled boucle options for the conscious consumer, including our signature Speckled Stone with hints of greys and creams, and Speckled Honey - for those who love warm ochre and brown tones. For excellent quality, conscious design, and sustainably-sourced fabrics and processes, our eco boucle turns wasteful plastic from our seas and oceans into luxurious fabric.
Made from a blend of 70% recycled polyester and 30% polyester, these fabrics are produced from recycled PET yarns using particles of used plastics. This eco boucle is used in many of our chair, sofa, and stool ranges, and maintains a soft and durable premium quality. Eco-friendly choices don’t mean compromise: you can have a luxurious design, affordability, and a smaller environmental footprint.

Types of Boucle
As “Boucle” describes the look and production process - “to curl/to loop” - the fibre or material itself can vary, adding to the exciting versatility of this fabric. What boucle fabric is made of can be defined as ‘yarn’ and includes wool, cotton, and synthetic materials. Boucle wool is the more traditional choice that offers warmth and luxury, perfect for fashion.

Modern boucle is light, breathable, and affordable, whilst retaining that all‑important premium luxe quality.
Synthetic and mixed fibre boucle materials are popular, and it’s easy to see why. Otherwise known as “blended boucle”, this is the perfect balance of durability and affordability with the natural, organic feel of boucle material.
Teddy Boucle is a high-pile, cloud-like variation of boucle fabric with a distinctive softness reminiscent of a teddy bear’s fur. More plush than modern tactile boucles, it has the ultimate snug-like feeling. Teddy boucle is often produced in a light colour.
The beauty of boucle is that it isn’t limited to one shade. Neutral and earthy bases often feature subtle speckles for a rich, mottled effect. This is why we call many of our signature boucle “speckled”. Our Speckled Stone mixes creams and greys, while Speckled Cappuccino layers cream and warm browns - textures that disguise everyday marks and stay fresh for longer.
“We wanted our boucles to really shine...
We use exaggerated curves in our chairs and sofas with boucle upholstery with purpose. The texture and depth of colour becomes centrestage. A perfect blend of modern and retro, and highlights the wonderful depth of colour our boucles have as well.”

Now for the good stuff...
Boucle in interior design has never left; it will always be a staple fabric, so investing in boucle furniture makes sense.
First things first, get ivory white out of your mind. Steering away from the traditional whites and greys, boucle is in its low-maintenance era, and we’re here for it. Sacking off the problematic colour palette, boucle is available in many neutral tones; the tactile feel and speckled colours offer intrigue, whilst being easy to work with.
How to style your boucle furniture
A boucle sofa or accent armchair is a great introduction to this premium fabric. Go for tones such as warm creams, cloudy greys, or speckled browns. All give that luxurious, cosy vibe, and allow you to work with other colours too.
How to style your boucle furniture
Use the variations of colours within the boucle fabric to pick out your dream colour palette. Specks of caramel brown can match your new rug, or greys within our speckled stone boucle match the stripped-back colour palette of Japandi-inspired interiors.
How to style your boucle furniture
For depth and warmth, bring that boucle sofa down a notch with a walnut-stained wood TV Unit and Mid-Century inspired coffee table. For neutral boucle dining chairs, nothing beats a warm, dark wood dining table.
How to style your boucle furniture
For modern edge, high gloss surfaces and sleek metal with tubular frames offer a contrast to the softness of large boucle armchairs and sofas. Consider high shine from glass coffee tables, or dark and stormy marble table options, and check out how to style high gloss here.

To echo boucle’s softness for further visual appeal, curved tables, accessories, and lighting give that sought-after retro vibe. Avoid mixing too many textures, patterns, and materials that will overpower your space. Let your boucle centrepiece do the talking.
How to clean boucle fabric
Boucle’s signature loops make it wonderfully tactile, but they also need gentle care. With easy routine care and quick attention to spills, your boucle sofa or chair will maintain its cosy, elegant look for years. To keep your upholstery looking fresh, follow these steps on how to clean boucle furniture.
1. Regular upkeep
Vacuum weekly using the soft brush attachment. Run the nozzle lightly across the surface to lift dust and prevent dirt from settling between loops.
2. Immediate spot cleaning
Blot spills right away with a clean, dry cloth—never rub. For water-based stains, dab with a slightly damp cloth and mild, pH-neutral soap. For oil-based stains, sprinkle baking soda to absorb grease, let it sit 15 minutes, then vacuum before blotting.
3. Deep cleaning
Mix a small amount of gentle upholstery cleaner or wool-safe detergent with lukewarm water. Test on a hidden area first. Gently sponge the fabric; avoid over-wetting. Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened in plain water and allow to air-dry.
Rotate sofa cushions regularly for even wear. Use a fabric protector approved for textured upholstery. Keep furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Boucle is more than a trend—it’s a timeless fabric that balances comfort, durability, and visual intrigue. Its looped texture adds instant depth and warmth to any space, while modern fibre blends make it strong, breathable, and surprisingly easy to care for.
Whether you're drawn to the soft, cloud-like texture, the plentiful sustainable and recycled options, or the versatility, bouclé offers lasting value. It’s a fabric that feels luxurious yet lives beautifully in everyday homes.
Choosing boucle means investing in furniture that remains stylish season after season, offering tactile comfort, subtle elegance, and a quality finish that stands the test of time.
